This year Gianni Versace would have been 72. On July 15, 1997, Gianni Versace was murdered on the steps of his villa on Miami’s South Beach, Ocean Drive. His murder gripped the world with tales of seduction, glamour and death.
Gianni Versace’s legacy still lives on today, with references in music and pop culture today. The house of Versace was established in 1978. Gianni’s first couture line debuted in 1989. Versace’s designs are known for their bold prints, bright colours, flamboyant, extravagant designs and sexy silhouettes, during a time where the taste was more muted and simpler. Versace was linked to the mania of the original super models. When the world was obsessed and totally fixated on Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford. Gianni made the 90’s “IT” girls the stars of his shows and dressed them in his most risqué designs. The moment the super models appeared in George Michael’s popular song “Freedom” theis became 90’s movement elevating the models to house hold names. One of the most memorable 90’s moments was when Gianni Versace closed his Fall 1991 show with Linda, Cindy, Naomi, and Christy lip-syncing the Freedom song lyrics. From that moment on Versace and the supermodels became synonymous of the era! History was made!
As you look through our Gianni highlights you maybe shocked at how on trend they are now! This year Versace has relaunched the 1991 baroque style and the hottest stars like Gigi & Bella Hadid, Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner have all been pictured sporting the revamped 90’s Versace designs.
